PAR’s 2013 “EVERYDAY IMAGES” AWARD SPOTLIGHTS SCRANTON ARTIST ETHAN GERBER

Ethan Award 2013

Ethan Gerber is a watercolor artist with a growing reputation in Northeast Pennsylvania, where he makes his home.  He also happens to have an intellectual disability.  PAR, Pennsylvania Advocacy and Resources for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities chose a photo of Ethan standing proudly by his artwork as the winner of this year’s Everyday Images Award.

PAR’s Everyday Image Award celebrates the joy of family, the friendships and the bonds that form between people with and without disabilities, and the importance and benefits of community inclusion.

In Northeast PA, the most important and longest-running juried show is the Wilkes-Barre “Fine Arts Fiesta.” Ethan competed for the first time in 2011, and won “First” in his category (“Adult Watercolor”) as well as the coveted “Best in Show” award. Last year, he was recognized by the state of New Jersey as a 2012 New Jersey Community Star and honored for his accomplishments and successes in his community.

“An artist measures success the same way anyone else does…career achievements, career highlights, financial rewards, peer approval, critical approval, and satisfaction,” said Rebecca Hokien, the person who nominated Danny for the award.  “By all of those standards, Ethan is not only a success, but an enviable success as artists go, and he takes pride in identifying himself as “an artist. It is so wonderful he is being recognized here today”

Ethan accepted the Everyday Images Award at PAR’s annual conference on November 20th in Harrisburg. An estimated 400 people, including directors and staff from community service providers, families and individuals with intellectual disabilities as well as legislators and government officials participated in the conference. Staff from Keystone Community Resources, a Scranton-based organization accompanied Ethan. The organization has supported Ethan since he was a young man.  He accepted his award with a short speech, “Thank you. I am so happy!”
